The first attempt at the quiz I only got 2 correct out of 20!!! How sad is that? The second time I was able to get 13, which was a lot better. This quiz showed me that people aren’t always as they appear. This is the same in a lot of different categories. Clothing is one, for example. Accent is another. Most people who arn’t from the south think that southern people are ignorant because of the way they talk. This is not true. It goes back to that old saying “you can’t judge a book by its cover.” Until you open the book and see what is inside, you never know what is truly there.
I guess most people are thrown off by first impressions. Just because someone might appear to be different, racially or other, doesn’t mean you won’t get along with that person or that you won’t have something in common with them. First impressions are important, but they aren’t always correct.
This task was very hard. Just because someone looked like they might belong in one category, doesn’t mean they did. Looks are not a very good way to tell of someone’s ethnicity. Maybe sometimes it is better to ask them than to assume, but only if you ask in an appropriate way so you don’t offend anyone.
The criteria I used to place people in different categories was hair texture, skin color, eye shape, and other facial features. This is very important to realize that even though someone may appear a certain way, your preconceived notions about a person are probably wrong, as in my case. This is also important for me to try and not categorize someone based on their appearance. I would not want someone to have their own opinions about me before they have met me, although most people have opinions about people they have never met.
It is good to remind yourself to get to know someone on the inside, because if you go on apperance alone, you never know what great things you could be missing out on.
